TF2 lagging and freezing-stuttery issue (2024)

So about 2 months ago i noticed some weird lags and stutters in TF2. I thought nothing of it for the first month as it only happened very occasionally and for a short time (1 second or less) but now it is much worse and sometimes causes the game to crash.

What i have done so far:

1) Verified game cache:
This led nowhere because every time i checked (after playing and then crashing) 1 or 2 files were missing and had to be reacquired. Note: it seems this is the problem but i don't know which files are missing :S
2) Re-installing TF2 (deleting local content first):
Didn't work, had same problem as stated above.
3) Making my CFG less cluttered:
Didn't help either.
4) Uninstalled Anti Virus (AVG Internet Security 2015)
5) Changed cl_loadondemand_default 1 to cl_loadondemand_default 0

None helped.

VIDEO OF THE PROBLEM:
https://www.copy.com/s/YR8hfYhyYAlmxky7 (clean link)
virus scan: https://www.virustotal.com/en/url/6f...is/1421258956/

If you need my cfg (to inspect the problem) just let me know and i'll upload it.

I would really appreciate a fix for this problem as i play tf2 as my MAIN hobby and it would suck "BIG TIME" if i couldn't play it anymore.

I've been having this issue for like, almost a year, even after a full format and new SSD install. Not as bad, but a lot of frame skips and freezes. Good luck.

I don't know if this can help you, but on my mac it got fixed by giving steam no permissions in my security settings.

a lot of freezing/stuttering winds up being from nonupdated drivers or antivirus, not your configs and sh*t.

obv a dumb config can screw you over but I think the way to go is to make sure your audio/network drivers are up to date and that youre not using an antivirus that is constantly scanning your game files while youre playing.

I had a similar problem because of my cfg (had too many sub files executing) but that was resolved. I have been running my normal antivirus setup for nearly a year now so that is probably not the issue. I have updated (and reverted to old) GPU drivers.

What does that do, i'll try it :)

I had these problems suddenly arise recently, I fixed the problem for a while by updating my drivers, but then the game started jittering hardcore again. The ultimate fix for this was uninstalling my firewall/antivirus and just used the Windows Defender/Firewall that came with my Windows 8 installation. TF2 fps instantly shot up and stayed constant after that. Not as 'safe' per se but just practice safe browsing habits.

Interesting. Will look into this.

cl_loadondemand_default 0 is supposed to disable dynamic loading of items (people have reported that this causes pretty bad TF2 lag when someone changes their loadout).

I still seem to be getting the freezing issue but the wierd stuttering is gone.

I have tried everything that was suggested here.

When i check for the integrity of game cache i am always missing 1 or 2 files. That is weird, is there any way to find out which files those are and replace them manually?

"Important: One or more files may fail to verify.

This is normal for most Steam games. The files that fail to verify are local configuration files that should not be replaced as part of this process. You can safely ignore this message."

Didn't to happen ever before though.
That doesn't change the fact that i am still getting these stuttering freezes.
